Finance Minister Engages in Strategic Dialogue with UN Envoy on Sudan Peace Efforts

Khartoum: Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim, met with the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Sudan, Mr. Pekka Haavisto, alongside the Envoy's Political Affairs Officer and Special Assistant, Ms. Nayla Hajar. The meeting focused on the current humanitarian, economic, and political landscape in Sudan.

According to Sudan News Agency, the discussion emphasized the rejection of pre-formulated solutions proposed by the international community. Dr. Ibrahim highlighted the necessity of convening key stakeholders to create a clear vision and establish a suitable starting point for the peace process.

Both parties examined strategies to further peace initiatives, underscoring that sustainable peace is contingent on fostering trust among all parties through measures such as prisoner exchanges, opening humanitarian corridors, and implementing a short-term ceasefire to aid humanitarian efforts.

The meeting also underscored the critical need to protect civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and utilities, to minimize civilian harm and prevent their militarization. The significance of reconstruction as a cornerstone of the peace process was also discussed, noting that stability hinges on restoring public services to bolster public confidence in peace.

Furthermore, both sides reiterated the importance of redefining the relationship between military and political operations, ensuring the integration of armed forces into state institutions under clear legal frameworks, and eliminating any unauthorized military entities.

The parties concluded that achieving peace in Sudan necessitates a gradual, step-by-step approach, rooted in practical measures, evolving into a comprehensive and enduring political process.
