Khartoum: Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Professor Ismat Gurashi met with Darfur Region Governor General Minni Arko Minnawi at his office to address the pressing issues affecting the agricultural season, food security, and humanitarian conditions in the region. The meeting, held in the presence of Darfur's Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Al-Sadig Khamis Barnago, centered on efforts to boost agricultural production and achieve food security amid ongoing challenges.
According to Sudan News Agency, Al-Sadig Khamis Barnago highlighted that the discussions primarily revolved around the impact of war on the agricultural sector. The meeting focused on the challenges faced during the agricultural season and the broader humanitarian and food security situation in Darfur. Barnago emphasized that violations by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia have hindered farmers' access to agricultural areas, affecting livelihoods and agricultural output. This has exacerbated the suffering of citizens and posed a growing threat to food security in the region.
Governor Minni Arko Minnawi provided a detailed briefing on the crimes and violations committed by the RSF militia against civilians, as well as measures taken by the regional government to mitigate the humanitarian and food crisis. These efforts aim to avert risks of famine, drought, and a widening food gap in the near future.
Barnago affirmed the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation's commitment to addressing the anticipated food gap by coordinating with state institutions. He noted that the issue of food security is receiving close attention from the Transitional Sovereignty Council and the Council of Ministers. Federal and regional institutions are working in tandem to tackle emerging challenges, support the agricultural season, and provide essential needs for citizens, particularly in war-affected areas.
The Darfur Region Minister stressed the importance of joint efforts by federal, regional, and community institutions to create favorable conditions for farmers and ensure successful agricultural activities.
