Khartoum: UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy to Sudan Pekka Haavisto engaged in discussions with Sudanese church leaders in Khartoum to understand the challenges faced by Christian communities and the impact of ongoing conflict on their places of worship and institutions.
According to Sudan News Agency, the church leaders informed Haavisto about the significant damage inflicted on churches and related facilities in Khartoum and other regions. They reported on discriminatory practices and violations against Christians during the period of the Rapid Support Forces' (RSF) control over the capital. Despite the challenges, church leaders remained with their congregations, providing essential religious and social services until the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) regained control.
The discussions also touched upon governmental efforts to rehabilitate damaged religious sites and tackle religious discrimination. The church leaders emphasized the role of TSC President General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in focusing on church reconstruction and his active engagement with religious leaders. These actions are seen as part of larger initiatives aimed at fostering equality and promoting religious and social coexistence in the period following the conflict.
