Sudan Welcomes Chinese Company’s Interest in Power Sector Projects

Khartoum: Minister of Energy, Eng. Al-Mo'tasem Ibrahim Ahmed, welcomed the interest of China's Hunan Construction Engineering Company in undertaking electricity projects in Sudan in partnership with the National Energy and Engineering Company, stressing the importance of strengthening Chinese cooperation and investment in the power sector.

According to Sudan News Agency, the minister made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the Chinese company attended by senior officials from the electricity sector and the National Energy and Engineering Company. Ahmed described Sudanese-Chinese relations as historic, strategic, and deeply rooted, noting that the two countries have, over several decades, cooperated in implementing major strategic and vital projects in Sudan, particularly in the oil, electricity, and dam sectors, as well as in other development fields.

He welcomed Hunan's interest in implementing several electricity projects, including the Al-Jomou'iya Power Station, with a capacity of 200 megawatts, and Garri Power Station (3), with a capacity of 300 megawatts. The projects are planned under a hybrid generation system combining thermal power and solar energy. The minister emphasized the importance of the proposed projects in supporting the stability of electricity supplies and diversifying Sudan's power-generation sources.

He also highlighted the significant investment opportunities available in Sudan's electricity sector, particularly given the extensive damage sustained by the country's power infrastructure. The next phase, he said, requires expanding partnerships with companies and institutions possessing expertise and technical capabilities, while making greater use of modern technologies and renewable energy to support the reconstruction of the sector and increase its generation capacity.

The head of the Hunan Construction Engineering delegation, meanwhile, presented the company's capabilities and experience in implementing infrastructure and energy projects, as well as projects it has carried out in several countries. He reaffirmed the company's interest and readiness to contribute to electricity projects in Sudan and to strengthen cooperation and partnership with its Sudanese counterparts.
