New york: Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Security Council Anna Evstigneeva affirmed that her country's position aligns with that of the Sudanese government, stressing that Russia would not allow any expansion of the restrictions imposed on Sudan.
According to Sudan News Agency, Evstigneeva emphasized the need to respect the sovereignty of the Sudanese government to ensure the unity of state institutions and protect civilians. She highlighted the importance of enabling the Sudanese government to obtain the necessary resources to fulfill its national responsibilities.
The Security Council session concluded on Friday without adopting the US proposal to expand the arms embargo to cover the entire territory of Sudan. On the same day, the Council extended the sanctions regime imposed on Sudan under Resolution 1591 for one month, until October 9, 2026.
The US proposal faced reservations from Russia, China, and several African countries, as well as opposition from the Sudanese government, which viewed the expansion of the arms embargo as undermining its right to self-defence and its ability to confront armed groups.
