Ministry of Industry and Trade Implements Measures Against Substandard Imports

Khartoum: Minister of Industry and Trade Mahasen Ali Yagoub chaired a meeting on Thursday with the Director General of the Customs Forces, representatives from the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO), and the Economic Intelligence Directorate. The meeting focused on implementing measures to curb the entry of goods that fail to meet import standards, with an aim to protect the national economy and public health.

According to Sudan News Agency, the Minister highlighted the issue of goods entering the market through smuggling and personal imports, which violate Decision No. (74). These goods were found to be non-compliant with required standards concerning weight, quality, and manufacturing methods.

The Minister underscored the importance of adhering to the delegated authorities between the federal Ministry of Trade and the states to enhance oversight of exports and imports. She directed the creation of a joint committee comprising members from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Customs Forces, SSMO, and the Economic Intelligence Directorate. This committee is tasked with inspecting and seizing all non-compliant goods and ensuring that proper procedures are followed. Additionally, the Minister called for strengthening detection equipment at border crossings and entry points.
