Higher Committee Urges War Economic Plan Amid Rebel Conflict.

Port sudan: The Undersecretary of Planning at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Mohammed Bashar, who also serves as the Chairman of the Higher Committee on Preparation for the First Economic Conference, emphasized the pressing need for a strategic economic plan. This necessity arises from the challenges imposed by the ongoing conflict with the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Bashar announced during a press conference in Portsudan that the preparations for the first economic conference are complete. Scheduled for November 19-20, the conference will convene under the theme ‘Together to Accomplish Sustainable Economic Recovery’. Its primary goal is to devise strategies that promote economic stability in the face of ongoing turmoil.

Dr. Bashar explained that during the initial year of the conflict, the government’s approach was reactive, focusing on immediate solutions. However, there has been a shift towards a more strategic phase with the implemen
tation of economic policies that have yielded some positive outcomes, such as a reduction in inflation and improved economic indicators.

Highlighting the efforts towards economic recovery, Dr. Bashar revealed that Finance Minister Dr. Gibril Ibrahim established a committee comprising academics and economic experts from various institutions. This committee worked diligently over three months, culminating in the decision to hold the forthcoming economic conference.

The conference will feature a specialized workshop on gold ore, aiming to maximize benefits from this crucial resource. It will also present several working papers designed to chart the future trajectory of Sudan’s economy. Dr. Bashar underscored the war’s severe impact on the national economy, initiated by the RSF militia’s actions since mid-April 2023, and the urgent need for intensified efforts to achieve economic recovery.
