Port Sudan: During a meeting with the Executive Office of the Darfur and Kordofan Journalists and Media Association, Governor of the Darfur Region, Commander Minni Arko Minawi, underscored the significance of media in documenting violations committed by militias. He emphasized the challenges media professionals face in Kordofan and Darfur amid the ongoing war in Sudan, which has severely impacted various aspects of life.
According to Sudan News Agency, the gathering took place at Minawi’s office in Port Sudan, where discussions focused on the state of journalists and strategies to aid them in fulfilling their professional and national responsibilities. Minawi highlighted the media’s role as a crucial partner in supporting reform and change, particularly in expressing the concerns of local communities suffering under severe humanitarian conditions in cities like El Fasher, Dilling, and Kadugli.
Minawi stated, “The media represents society’s mirror and must be a voice for the voiceless, especially in light of the siege and starvation imposed by the militias on defenseless civilians.” He called for the documentation of violations to communicate them to local and international audiences and humanitarian organizations, aiming to expose crimes against civilians and support human rights defense efforts.
Furthermore, he urged media professionals to combat racist and regionalist rhetoric that threatens Sudanese unity, advocating for collective action to reinforce national solidarity.
Professor Ali Mansour, the association’s president, highlighted that the association’s formation at this critical juncture aims to support media professionals who face severe conditions after losing their jobs and homes, prompting them to flee or seek refuge.
