Khartoum: Energy Minister Engineer Motasem Ibrahim Ahmed announced positive outcomes from recent talks with the Egyptian side concerning cooperation in the electricity and energy sectors. The discussions included key figures such as the Wali of Northern State, the Director General of the Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company, and Hani Salah, Assistant Egyptian Foreign Minister for Sudan and South Sudan Affairs.
According to Sudan News Agency, the electricity supply exported from Egypt to Sudan has increased to 75 megawatts (MW), following an agreement to raise it from 50 MW to 80 MW. This increase is intended to address the demands of the agricultural season in Northern State and support the residential sector.
Both sides agreed to expedite the completion of the second phase of the Egypt-Sudan electricity interconnection project, aiming to boost its capacity to 300 MW, with a long-term goal of reaching 1,000 MW. They also committed to collaborating on rehabilitating electricity networks, generation plants, and transformers that suffered damage in recent periods.
The discussions further explored training and capacity building for the Sudanese workforce, alongside partnerships in solar and wind energy projects. Dr. Mahmoud Ismat, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, reiterated Egypt's support for Sudan, expressing readiness to provide expertise, equipment, and training necessary for rebuilding and enhancing Sudan's electricity sector. He emphasized the enduring historic ties between the nations and their peoples.
The Energy Minister welcomed Egypt's supportive stance, affirming that the outcomes of the talks would bolster efforts to stabilize electricity supplies and rehabilitate Sudan's energy infrastructure.
