UNDP Outlines Three Pillars for Sudan’s Economic Recovery

Khartoum: United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator Haoliang Xu affirmed that the private sector is a key pillar of efforts to promote economic recovery in Sudan, stressing the importance of building on the resilience demonstrated by economic actors in confronting the repercussions of the war.

According to Sudan News Agency, Haoliang, speaking via videoconference at the Dialogue Conference on the Recovery of Sudan's Private Sector, highlighted the continuation of agricultural production and commercial activity. He noted that efforts by companies and individuals to preserve livelihoods despite disruptions provide a foundation on which investments and economic interventions can be expanded during the next phase.

Haoliang emphasized that the conference represents an opportunity to unite the government, the private sector, financial institutions, and development partners around a common economic recovery agenda. He underscored the importance of ensuring that discussions are transparent, candid, and ambitious, and that their outcomes lead to practical partnerships, clear commitments, and effective implementation.

The UN official called for a focus on three main areas: transparently identifying challenges and mapping structural and operational obstacles; assessing successful experiences and benefiting from initiatives and solutions that have proven effective; and identifying opportunities and roles, developing clear implementation steps, and defining the responsibilities of the concerned parties.

The United Nations Development Programme in Sudan affirmed its commitment to supporting economic recovery efforts and strengthening partnerships with the government, the private sector, and development partners to advance sustainable development in the country.
