UK’s Call for Darfur Experts’ Report Sparks Debate on Military Exports to UAE

Accra:Dr. Amjad Farid, Adviser to the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), expressed concerns over Britain's recent actions. He noted that the UK's call to publish the Panel of Experts on Darfur's report, intended for referral to the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee, raises questions about its consistency. This is due to the UK's continued issuance of military equipment export licences to a country allegedly supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Amjad highlighted that Britain's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Kate Foster, urged for the report's publication and increased scrutiny on those funding and supporting the conflict. She emphasized that the drones used in Sudan are being facilitated through external networks.

Dr. Amjad pointed out that the leaked report includes sections on Emirati support for the RSF militia and was submitted to the Security Council on July 13. He mentioned ongoing Emirati efforts to block its publication. The Panel of Experts has reportedly found credible evidence of Emirati support and arms supplies to the militia.

Furthermore, Dr. Amjad noted the rise in the value of British military equipment export licences to the UAE. The licences under Category ML10, covering aircraft and drones, escalated from £4 million in 2023 to £87 million in 2024 and £77 million in 2025.

He posed a critical question about whether Britain would align its actions with its statements by fully supporting the report's publication and holding those accountable for the arms supply networks. He questioned whether the UK would reconsider its military export licences to the UAE, given the potential risk of equipment being diverted to Sudan, or if it would continue to permit such exports while calling for an end to arms flows into Sudan.
