Khartoum: Sudan participated in the First Forum of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the Muslim Diaspora, held in the Turkish capital Ankara on September 8-9, 2026, under the theme 'From Belonging to Outreach,' with the participation of several OIC member states.
According to Sudan News Agency, Sudan was represented by the Secretary-General of the Secretariat of Sudanese Working Abroad (SSWA), Dr. Abdel-Rahman Sayed Ahmed, who delivered Sudan's statement outlining a number of proposals aimed at developing joint efforts, strengthening the role of diaspora communities, and making better use of their potential.
He stressed the importance of rethinking the concept of diaspora and communities from a partnership perspective, considering them a major source of knowledge, human capital, and economic resources that countries can benefit from by harnessing the capabilities and expertise of their members to support development and strengthen cooperation among states and societies.
During the forum, Sayed Ahmed put forward several proposals, most notably the establishment of a Higher Council for Diaspora Community Affairs in OIC member states, which would help enhance coordination, communication, and the exchange of expertise among diaspora communities.
The proposals also included establishing a network of diaspora professionals and experts, developing digital services for citizens abroad, launching joint programs, creating a permanent platform to connect diaspora communities, and strengthening their role in people-to-people diplomacy, alongside continued dialogue and coordination.
