Qatar Reaffirms Support for International Labour Organization and Emphasizes AI’s Role in Decent Work

Geneva: The State of Qatar has reiterated its dedication to supporting the International Labour Organization (ILO) and enhancing international cooperation. It aims to create a more equitable and sustainable work environment, where technological advances are aligned with social progress. This was articulated by HE Minister of Labour Dr. Ali bin Samikh Al Marri during the plenary session of the 114th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Al Marri expressed Qatar's appreciation for the ILO Director-General's report on "Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Decent Work" and the report on workers' conditions in the occupied Arab territories. He emphasized that the real challenge of AI lies in its application by governments and social partners, rather than the technology itself. The future of work will be shaped by policies and institutions that channel technological transformation towards social justice and decent work.

Dr. Al Marri stated that digital transformation's success should be evaluated based on its ability to boost productivity, create decent work opportunities, and enhance social protection and skills development. He emphasized that sustainable economic and technological transformations rely on robust labour market institutions capable of adapting to change. Successful reforms are those supported by social dialogue and trust between governments, employers, and workers.

In his address, Dr. Al Marri assured that Qatar will continue to develop policies and institutions that bolster labour market resilience and reinforce principles of protection, fairness, and partnership among production stakeholders. He highlighted the ongoing discussions on establishing an international standard for the platform economy as a significant opportunity to create a framework that encourages innovation while safeguarding workers' rights.

Dr. Al Marri also addressed the broader challenges facing labour markets, including conflicts and crises that impact economies, employment opportunities, and social stability. He noted the interconnectedness of the labour sector and the global impacts of supply chain disruptions and market fluctuations.

Emphasizing international cooperation, Dr. Al Marri highlighted the importance of dialogue and peaceful solutions in achieving sustainable development and fostering an environment conducive to decent work. He also stressed the need to protect the rights of Palestinian workers in the occupied Arab territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where labour markets have collapsed.

Dr. Al Marri concluded by underlining the necessity of supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts to address the humanitarian crisis, restore economic activity, and enable workers and their families to live with dignity and hope for the future.
