Khartoum: The Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) has welcomed the launch of an initiative to facilitate Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue inside Sudan under the supervision of an independent committee of Sudanese elders, announced on August 30, 2026. The Secretariat affirmed its support for the initiative as an important step toward promoting dialogue, rebuilding trust, and creating a conducive environment for peaceful engagement.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Conference issued a statement on Friday, expressing its firm belief that sustainable peace can best be achieved through an inclusive, Sudanese-owned political process. This process aims to bring together all relevant parties and stakeholders to consider the aspirations and interests of the Sudanese people. The Conference expressed encouragement for the initiative to promote a spirit of openness, interconnectedness, and mutual respect, with the aim of reaching broad-based consensus on Sudan's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful future.
The statement called on all relevant parties to approach the dialogue in a spirit of good faith, mutual respect, and shared responsibility. The common objective is to end violence and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people. The Conference also encouraged all Sudanese parties to seize this opportunity to engage constructively, prioritize dialogue over confrontation, and work collectively toward a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the conflict.
The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region affirmed its readiness to engage in close consultations with the Government of Sudan, stakeholders, regional organizations, and international partners. This support aims to promote Sudanese-led efforts focused on peace, stability, national reconciliation, and the restoration of lasting peace in the country. The Conference also called on the international community to support Sudan in achieving peace and stability throughout the country.
