ICC Affirms Ongoing Investigations into El Fasher Crimes

El-Fasher:Khartoum Representative of the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mr. Dahiro Sant Ana, confirmed that investigations into alleged crimes committed in the Darfur region are ongoing, including incidents in the city of El-Fasher in October 2025. He emphasized the Office's dedication to delivering justice for victims and holding those responsible accountable under international law.

According to Sudan News Agency, Mr. Ana spoke at a legal symposium organized by the Sudanese Bar Association and the National Human Rights Commission, titled 'Rapid Support Forces' Crimes in El-Fasher The Imperative of Preventing Impunity.' He explained that the ICC's investigations into Darfur are conducted under the framework of the United Nations Security Council's Resolution 1593 of 2005, with a jurisdiction limited to the Darfur region.

Mr. Ana stated that the Office had been investigating events in West Darfur before allocating resources to El Fasher. He confirmed progress in the investigations, highlighting the importance of witness testimony and other evidence, such as satellite imagery, which is being analyzed for authenticity. He stressed the need for reliable evidence to meet legal standards and noted the Office's commitment to witness protection and confidentiality.

The ICC Prosecutor's Office operates independently and impartially, Mr. Ana explained, and it does not take instructions from any states or entities. The Office gathers both incriminating and exculpatory evidence to maintain the integrity of the judicial process. Cooperation with the Sudanese government, partners, and civil society organizations is vital for the Office’s activities related to investigating alleged crimes in Darfur. Mr. Ana expressed the Office's readiness to enhance national capacities in crime documentation through training and technical assistance.

Supporting Sudanese civil society organizations in documenting violations is also a priority, Mr. Ana noted, underscoring the importance of preserving evidence according to legal standards. He concluded by asserting that justice and accountability are crucial for peace in Sudan and called for increased attention and documentation efforts concerning the violations in El-Fasher. The Office remains committed to pursuing justice for victims and preventing impunity in the region.
