Khartoum: Federal Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim recently engaged in discussions with the Governor of Darfur Region, Minni Arko Minawi, and his delegation to address the region's health challenges. The meeting, attended by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Dr. Ali Babiker Sayed Ahmed and senior ministry officials, emphasized enhancing health service delivery and coordination with regional and international entities.
According to Sudan News Agency, the meeting focused on the current health situation in Darfur and the pressing need for effective coordination with the regional government and various organizations through the Joint Higher Committee. The minister highlighted a significant increase in immunization coverage, reaching over 90 percent despite ongoing conflicts. He stressed the importance of maintaining vaccination services for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in safe areas and neighboring Chad.
The minister also praised the dedication of medical personnel in Darfur, linking their efforts to national pride. He shared that Sudan's progress in expanding immunization was recognized at a recent African health ministers' meeting in Tanzania. Additionally, discussions with the Chadian Minister of Health in Geneva aimed at reinforcing health cooperation for displaced communities were disclosed.
The Undersecretary emphasized the necessity of a recovery and reconstruction plan post-liberation, focusing on training and retaining medical personnel in Darfur. He warned of the terrorist Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militias looting health institutions, underscoring the urgency for preparedness.
Governor Minni Arko Minawi detailed the region's health challenges, urging the Federal Ministry of Health to assist in meeting these needs. He prioritized health services, especially for frontline forces and displaced populations, while expressing hope for lasting peace and security across Sudan. He extended gratitude to the Ministry for its support and collaborative efforts.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to continued cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the regional government, alongside expanded partnerships with international and national organizations.
