Khartoum: Political Affairs and Foreign Relations Adviser to the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), Dr. Amjad Farid, stated that the ruling Al Nahyan regime in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) used its influence within the UN Security Council to obstruct the referral of a UN report to the Sanctions Committee established under Resolution 1591. The report contains evidence concerning the UAE's support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan.
According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Farid explained that Resolution 1591, issued under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, empowers the Security Council to impose sanctions on parties violating its provisions. Despite the report's intention to be presented to the Sanctions Committee, the UAE's influence has delayed this process.
In an interview with Sudan TV, Dr. Amjad highlighted that this obstruction aligns with efforts to abolish the sanctions regime and repeal Resolution 1591. This is parallel to a US proposal by Massad Boulos, adviser to the US president, aiming to expand the arms embargo to cover all of Sudan.
Dr. Amjad emphasized that the UAE leveraged its influence over certain Security Council members to block the report's presentation, which contains evidence of the UAE's contributions to the conflict in Sudan. He stressed that this blockade coincides with attempts to dismantle the sanctions associated with Resolution 1591.
He also noted that the US proposal to extend the arms embargo faces opposition from several Security Council members. The TSC President's Adviser warned that linking the renewal of the Sanctions Committee's mandate to the expansion could lead to the collapse of the existing sanctions regime.
Farid cautioned that the collapse of the sanctions could enable continued weapon supplies to the RSF militia through routes including Chad and Libya. This includes drones and other military equipment reportedly supplied by the UAE.
Dr. Amjad detailed that the report includes evidence of the UAE's involvement in supporting the RSF militia, pointing to air bridges from UAE bases to supply the militia with weapons. The report also documents UAE's involvement in sending Colombian mercenaries to support the RSF operations.
The mercenaries were reportedly recruited through a UAE-based company, Global Security Services Group, linked to the Emirati regime. The report also mentions the RSF militia's use of UAE-manufactured armored vehicles, delivered through the established air bridge.
Farid asserted that the report provides conclusive evidence, including documentation of aircraft landings at supply operation airports, supporting the claims against the UAE's involvement in the Sudanese conflict.
